Project Scope

The Sand Bypass Station Transformer and 415 Volt Distribution Board Replacement project aimed to address the aging electrical infrastructure at the Sand Bypass Station. The existing equipment was under capacity, outdated, non-compliant, and the arc fault risk was unacceptable for the work environment.

The project began with thorough site investigations to identify constraints and opportunities to improve the concept design. TEW collaborated with the client to ensure the timing and sequencing of construction activities were carefully coordinated to minimise disruptions and adhere to the agreed-upon project schedule.

  • Design and construct
  • Procurement, installation, test and commissioning of Kiosk Transformers.
  • Detailed design, fabrication, delivery and installation of AS 61439 compliant Main Switchboard.
  • Integration of existing electrical infrastructure into new compliant Switchboard.
  • Design and construct of underground electrical infrastructure.

The project began with thorough site investigations to identify constraints and opportunities to improve the concept design. TEW collaborated with the client to ensure the timing and sequencing of construction activities were carefully coordinated to minimise disruptions and adhere to the agreed-upon project schedule.

Challenges

The new equipment, including transformers and the 415 volt Distribution board, were procured and installed as per the project requirements. The existing infrastructure was demolished and removed, and all waste materials were lawfully disposed of.

Throughout the project, a strong emphasis was placed on safety, environmental considerations, and stakeholder engagement. Regular meetings were held to discuss project progress, address concerns, and identify opportunities for improvement. The project team implemented recovery strategies whenever necessary to ensure the project stayed on track in terms of time, cost, and quality.

Limited downtime of the Sand Bypass System during construction and provision of electrical power through generators to maintain power supply to the buildings, and other facilities connected to the Sand Bypass System electrical network.

  • Long procurement of specialist hardware and equipment.
  • Existing building constraints impacting on new Electrical Infrastructure.
  • Extended delivery lead times due to supply chain impacts.
  • Backup power systems operated and maintained for extended duration.

Outcomes

  • Successful design, construction and installation of Electrical Infrastructure within existing Building envelope.
  • Successful integration with existing Power and Control Systems.
  • Identification and improvement of existing electrical infrastructure while maintaining plant operations.
  • Continuous improvement of internal processes including applying improvement during project delivery.
