3.3kV Switchgear and PLC Replacement

Written by Taya Griffiths | 2023

Project Scope

Gold Coast Waterways Authority required replacement of the existing aged 3.3kV switchgear and PLC equipment for the power and control of the Sand Bypass Station at The Spit, Main Beach. The Sand Bypass Station is considered an Engineering Masterpiece in Australia that requires smooth and continual operation to provide safe access year-round from the Broadwater to the seaway.

  • PLC and SCADA Integration

Challenges

  • Long procurement of specialist hardware and equipment.
  • Existing building constraints impacting on new Electrical Infrastructure.
  • Extended delivery lead times due to supply chain impacts.
  • Specialist audit inspections and verification undertaken remotely due to border closures.
  • Backup power systems operated and maintained for extended duration.

Outcomes

  • Successful design, construction and installation of Electrical Infrastructure within existing Building envelope.
  • Third party audit inspections and certification approval during border closures and shutdowns.
  • Works successfully delivered during other key critical infrastructure works and upgrades being undertaken.
  • Identification and improvement of existing supply authority electrical infrastructure while maintaining plant operations.
  • Continuous improvement of internal processes including applying improvement during project delivery.
  • Successful backup power planning and implementation including changeover and alarm of failed drive units with no impact to key stakeholders.
