Coombabah STP Grit and Screenings Upgrade

Written by Taya Griffiths | 2023

Project Scope

Coombabah Sewage Treatment Plant undertook an upgrade of the Grit and Screenings Handling Equipment to improve and automate the systems, and to ensure consistency of equipment and process across all sites.  The project plan was to minimise impact on operations during upgrade and provide a completely serviceable and maintainable solution.

  • Electrical & Instrumentation Design, Mechanical Design and Civil Design
  • Mechanical Installation
  • Electrical & Instrumentation Installation
  • and Civil site works

Challenges

  • Critical changeover time frames.
  • Restricted time frames during critical electrical and mechanical changeovers and control system integration.
  • Change of a process within an existing operational Waste Water Treatment Plant.
  • Power and control system integration within an existing operational Waste Water Treatment Plant.
  • Existing building constraints impacting on new Electrical Infrastructure.
  • Complex electrical and mechanical isolations that involved wide stakeholder and technical expertise from specialist experts.
  • Various complex crane lifts, working in confined space, working at heights, critical shutdowns with critical timeframes and various disciplines comprising of Electricians, Fitters and Riggers.
  • Under building tunnel bore for gravity drainage into existing General Purpose Pump Station.

Outcomes

  • Successful design, construction and installation of Electrical Infrastructure within existing Building envelope.
  • Successful integration with existing Power and Control Systems.
  • Identification and improvement of existing supply authority electrical infrastructure while maintaining plant operations.
  • Successful implementation of modified process.
  • Continuous improvement of internal processes including applying improvement during project delivery.
